Wherever people live, they make choices about what plants to get rid of and what plants to add. Why? The Montgomery SWCD encourages you to look at your landscaping with new eyes, considering what each plant can offer beyond something pretty. Those purposes can be as individual as each person.
Maybe you want to make your yard a haven for wildlife. If you are interested in local food, what’s more sustainable than getting food from your own backyard? Perhaps you like photography. Attracting birds and butterflies to a lovely backdrop of blooming flowers in your backyard fits right into that hobby. Or, maybe you keep bees and want them to have plenty of nectar options. All of these can easily be accomplished with a landscape of pretty plants.
The Montgomery SWCD Tree & Plant Sale offers you options that fit several of these objectives at once. Icons have been added to the descriptions this year to help you to find the plants that best fit your plans. For further reading on creating landscapes that serve a greater purpose, consider Bringing Nature Home by Douglas W. Tallamy, and Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture by Toby Hemenway.
These books offer two excellent perspectives and tips on creating landscapes for the purpose of sustaining wildlife and sustaining people. These goals are not mutually exclusive. Happy reading and happy planting.
