JEFFERSON CITY — Farmer-leaders from across the nation re-elected Missouri Corn Growers Association (MCGA) board member Gary Porter to the National Corn Board July 15. The election was held during the National Corn Growers Association’s virtual Corn Congress, which traditionally takes place in Washington, D.C.
Porter, a corn farmer from Mercer, Mo., has represented Missouri corn growers for nearly 12 years, sitting on the MCGA and Missouri Corn Merchandising Council board of directors for four consecutive terms.
Through his role on the National Corn Board, Porter serves on the organization’s Finance Committee and is a representative to the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. He is also the board’s liaison to the Ethanol Action Team and the association’s co-chair for 2022 to the Commodity Classic Joint Venture Committee. Prior to joining the Corn Board, Porter worked on behalf of corn farmers nationally through his service as the team leader for the U.S. Grains Council Western Hemisphere Advisory Team.
In his speech to the NCGA delegates, Porter highlighted family, local ethanol sales, and the need to grow market access across the globe.
Porter was one of five growers elected to the National Corn Board. Also re-elected were Ken Hartman of Illinois and Brandon Hunnicutt of Nebraska. New board members are Jed Bower of Ohio and Brian Thalmann of Minnesota. All were elected to three-year terms with the exception of Thalmann, who was elected to a two-year term left open by FY21 First Vice President-Elect Chris Edgington of Iowa. Board members will step into their designated roles Oct. 1, 2020.
During the virtual sessions of Corn Congress, growers also established policy resolutions and discussed priorities for the year ahead.
