JEFFERSON, MO. — Despite a pandemic, a disputed election, and working to maintain markets, corn farmers continued to do what they do best in 2020 – produce a solid crop. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s yearend report, final 2020 corn crop production was estimated at 14.2 billion bushels nationwide, up 4 percent from 2019. The average yield was 172 bu/acre, up 4.5 bushels from 2019 while area harvested for grain was up 1 percent from a year ago at 82.5 million acres.
In the Show-Me State, growers produced the third highest crop in state history at 560.9 million bushels. Yield was the second highest in state history at 171 bu/acre, while area harvested for grain was estimated at 3.28 million acres. On the demand side, total corn ending stocks were lowered 150 million bushels to 1.552 billion, down slightly from last month’s projection of 1.7 billion bushels but less than half the 3.32 billion bushels estimated last May. The season-average corn price is raised to $4.20 per bushel.
