ST. PAUL, Minn. — Corn planted in 2022 for all purposes by Minnesota producers is estimated at 8.30 million acres according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Acreage report. This is down 100,000 acres from 2021 but 500,000 acres above the March intentions. Harvested acres for grain is forecast at 7.80 million acres.
Producers reported planting biotechnology varieties on 93 percent of their 2022 corn acres. The percent of corn acreage planted to insect resistant (Bt) varieties is estimated at 3 percent, herbicide resistant only varieties were planted on 4 percent of the acres, and stacked gene varieties were planted on 86 percent of the acres.
Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 7.50 million acres, down 150,000 acres from the acres planted in 2021 and down 500,000 acres from the March intentions. An expected 7.43 million acres of soybeans will be harvested. Producers reported using herbicide resistant varieties to plant 96 percent of their 2022 soybean acres.
Spring wheat planted in Minnesota is estimated at 1.25 million acres, 40,000 acres above last year but down 10,000 acres from the March intentions. Spring wheat harvested for grain is forecast at 1.16 million acres.
Oats planted acreage is estimated at 165,000 acres, down 15,000 acres from last year and down 65,000 acres from the March intentions. Harvested acres for grain is forecast at 105,000 acres. Rye planted acreage is estimated at 55,000 acres, down 2,000 acres from last year. Harvested acres for grain is forecast at 13,000 acres. Barley planted acreage is estimated at 45,000 acres, down 10,000 acres from last year and down 5,000 acres from the March intentions. Harvested acres for grain is forecast at 35,000 acres.
Dry edible beans planted acreage is estimated at 195,000 acres, down 45,000 acres from last year and down 5,000 acres from the March intentions. Dry edible bean acres harvested is forecast at 186,000 acres.
Potato acreage in Minnesota is estimated at 40,000 acres, down 2,000 acres from the previous year. Potato planted acreage by type of potato consists of 64 percent Russets, 23 percent Reds, 11 percent Whites, and 2 percent Yellows. An expected 39,500 acres of potatoes will be harvested.
Total dry hay expected to be harvested for 2022 is estimated at 1.20 million acres, up 110,000 acres from last year and up 40,000 acres from the March intentions. Alfalfa harvested acreage is an estimated 670,000 acres and other hay harvested acreage is estimated at 530,000 acres.
Sugarbeet acreage is estimated at 455,000 planted acres, 28,000 acres above 2021 and up 31,000 acres from the March intentions. An expected 441,000 acres of sugarbeets will be harvested.
United States Acreage
Corn planted area for all purposes in 2022 is estimated at 89.9 million acres, down 4 percent or 3.44 million acres from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is expected to be down or unchanged in 35 of the 48 estimating States. Area harvested for grain, at 81.9 million acres, is down 4 percent from last year.
Soybean planted area for 2022 is estimated at 88.3 million acres, up 1 percent from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is up or unchanged in 24 of the 29 estimating States.
All wheat planted area for 2022 is estimated at 47.1 million acres, up 1 percent from 2021. If realized, this represents the fifth lowest all wheat planted area since records began in 1919. The 2022 winter wheat planted area, at 34.0 million acres, is up 1 percent from last year, but down 1 percent from the previous estimate. Of this total, about 23.5 million acres are Hard Red Winter, 6.86 million acres are Soft Red Winter, and 3.61 million acres are White Winter. Area expected to be planted to other spring wheat for 2022 is estimated at 11.1 million acres, down 3 percent from 2021. Of this total, about 10.4 million acres are Hard Red Spring wheat. Durum planted area for 2022 is expected to total 1.98 million acres, up 21 percent from the previous year.
