Minnesota 2021 Certified Organics report

Milk from cows had the highest total value of sales for organic commodities

In 2021, Minnesota ranked tenth in the nation for the total number of certified organic farms with 650 farms, 4 percent of the nation's total according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – 2021 Organic Survey. (USDA, Lance Cheung)

ST. PAUL, Minn. — In 2021, Minnesota ranked tenth in the nation for the total number of certified organic farms with 650 farms, 4 percent of the nation’s total according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – 2021 Organic Survey. There were 163,835 acres of certified organic farmland in Minnesota. In 2021, the average organic farm in Minnesota was 252 acres, compared to 281 acres for the U.S. 

Milk from cows had the highest total value of sales for organic commodities in Minnesota at $40.8 million in sales. Minnesota produced 3 percent of national production. The State produced 19 percent of the Nation’s organic goat milk with sales totaling $444,000. 

Minnesota ranked fifth in certified organic corn for grain and fourth in organic soybean production in the U.S. and comprised 8 and 7 percent of the national production, respectively. 

Minnesota ranked third in certified organic rye production in the U.S. and comprised 15 percent of the Nation’s organic rye with sales totaling $967,168 in 2021. 

Minnesota ranked third in certified organic oat production in the U.S. and comprised 9 of the Nation’s organic oats with sales totaling $1.82 million in 2021. 

Minnesota produced 5 percent of the Nation’s organic dry hay with sales totaling $7.84 million in 2021.
