THORNTON, Colo. — The Fuel Up to Play 60 with Miles assembly program is already off to a great start this school year. Your Western Dairy Association School Wellness Team has been hard at work bringing the assembly program to thirteen schools this fall. Through this partnership with the Denver Broncos, we have reached 5,182 students already this school year with the program’s dairy-focused nutrition education messaging. Nicole Croy, director of school wellness, values the assembly program because, “it is so effective in delivering the program’s messages. I am always impressed with how captivated and engaged students are during the assemblies. A highlight of each assembly is hearing a gym full of students sing ‘Three times a day, that’s what I need’ while dancing with Miles.”
During the assemblies students learn about the importance of healthy eating and physical activity through an interactive program that combines fun songs or activity breaks with exciting virtual visits from Broncos’ VIPs, all backed by positive nutrition messaging. All assemblies focus on two key elements; fueling up with nutrient rich foods and getting up and playing for at least 60 minutes every day. The use of Miles provides an effective way to deliver a nutrition message to an audience that is sometimes difficult to reach.
The elementary school assembly inspires youth to “fuel up” with low-fat and fat-free dairy, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and to “get up and play” for at least 60 minutes a day. During the assembly Miles interacts with Denver Broncos Tight End and Fuel Up to Play 60 Player Ambassador Virgil Green, Bryan Snyder Denver Broncos Team Dietician, and two Denver Broncos cheerleaders via video screen while creating excitement about Fuel Up to Play 60. Students get a chance to interact with Miles during the assembly by singing, dancing, and helping him answer questions about nutrition. Miles makes sure everyone has a chance to get up and move!
Middle schools in the Fuel Up to Play 60 program try to beat the clock during the Win it in a Minute with Miles assembly. Similar to the popular Minute to Win It game show format, students race to beat the clock with Miles, playing Fuel Up to Play 60 themed nutrition and physical activity games.
In both assemblies, Miles also encourages students to eat breakfast at school if they don’t have time to eat at home. Our partnership with the Broncos is a valuable way for us to reach students in schools across the state with important nutrition messaging, most importantly teaching them the importance of including three servings of dairy daily in their diet.
Another important aspect of the assembly program for Western Dairy is spotlighting our dairy farm families’ support and commitment to youth health and wellness through the Fuel Up to Play 60 program. We appreciate the opportunity to recognize our farmers in person and invite anyone interested in attending a Miles assembly to connect with Scot Dutcher.
