EAST LANSING, Mich. — Potato Stocks in Michigan on Feb 1, 2021, were estimated at 7.3 million hundredweight (cwt), down 8 percent from last year’s 7.9 million cwt., according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service Great Lakes Region. February’s stocks represent 41 percent of the total production. Stocks include potatoes stored by both processors and growers.
Potato States held 207 million cwt in storage on February 1, 2021, up 2 percent from February 1, 2020. Potatoes in storage accounted for 50 percent of the States’ 2020 production compared with 48 percent a year earlier. The indicated potato disappearance, at 207 million cwt, was down 7 percent from the same period last year. Season- to-date shrink and loss, at 15.9 million cwt, was 4 percent higher than the same time last year. Processors in the 8 States used 107 million cwt of potatoes for the season, down 5 percent from February 2020.
