ST. JOHNS, Mich. — Over the past 5 years our Michigan Chapter SWCS Seminars have focused primarily on research and practices concerning soil health and water quality with special emphasis on phosphorus in the Great Lakes watershed. This year the focus is on social sciences. Perceptions, Engagement and Partnerships are the social science topics that will be featured by our presenters.
“Perceptions” will be the focus of Dr. Linda Prokopy’s opening morning presentation. What are farm operators thinking about soil health and water quality issues?
“Engagement” will be the focus of Jim Isley’s presentation which is next on the agenda. How are the landowners and operators he has worked with becoming engaged in the efforts to improve the agriculture industry’s effect on soil health and water quality?
Next on the agenda is “Partnerships.” Dr. Zach Curtis, Hydrosimulatics, Inc., and Paul Sachs, Director, Ottawa County Planning Commission, will discuss their partnership efforts concerning water resource management in Ottawa County.
Dr. Prokopy will open the afternoon session with more on “Perceptions”, but this time including “Partnerships” with agricultural advisors in the discussion.
The final feature of the day will be presentations on “Partnerships” featuring the following speakers:
- Wendy Ogilvie, Director of Environmental Programs, Grand Valley Watershed Council
- Mary Fales, Program Director, Michigan Chapter of The Nature Conservancy
- DJ Shook, Wildlife and Soil Conservationist, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.
