HAMILTON, Mich. — Michigan Allied Poultry Industries (MAPI) has announced that its member egg farms donated more than 3 million eggs to food pantries, ministries, food drive events and families in need during 2022.
A total of 3,145,752 eggs were distributed to nonprofits across the state, including Holland Rescue Mission, Hungry for Christ, People Helping People, Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, Feeding America West Michigan and Flat River Outreach Ministries.
MAPI member farms that donated eggs include DeWeerdt Poultry Farm, Farm Crest Foods, Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch, Schipper Eggs, Sunrise Acres Egg Farm, VandeBunte Eggs and Zoet Poultry.
“Michigan’s family egg farmers are incredibly generous and continue to be invested in their communities, making sure as many people as possible have access to healthy, local protein,” says Dr. Nancy Barr, executive director of Michigan Allied Poultry Industries. “Nutritient-dense foods like eggs are a critical source of healthy, affordable protein, especially during this time of increasing inflation when overall food prices have climbed.”
Eggs provide the most grams of protein per dollar spent on protein-rich foods.
Packed with plenty of vitamins and minerals for only 70 calories per egg, they also contain lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants that help prevent macular degeneration, as well as choline, an essential nutrient that contributes to fetal brain development and adult brain function.
While Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) impacted egg farms across the country and the egg supply, Michigan’s egg producers did an excellent job of keeping their flocks safe, allowing them to continue the tradition of donating eggs to local nonprofits and food pantries in need.
