CONCORD, N.H. — The Merrimack County Conservation District is hosting a poster contest for students in the county. The contest is modeled after the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) Poster Contest and is a chance for students to have their artwork displayed as part of a national conservation outreach initiative.
This poster contest is open to all public, private, and homeschool students currently in grades K-8 in Merrimack County. MCCD will select one winning poster in each of the following grade categories: K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-8. Winners in each category will receive a $50 prize and may be selected to go on to the national contest, where the winners will receive recognition at NACD’s annual meeting and the top three posters in each category will receive monetary prizes.
Submissions will be accepted up until June 30, 2020; posters should be packaged so they remain flat when sent for judging. The dimensions must be 14” x 22” (half sheet) and the phrase “Where would we BEE without our Pollinators?”, the 2020 Poster Contest theme, must be included somewhere on the front. Posters will be evaluated based on the conservation message, visual effectiveness, originality, and universal appeal. Read more about the contest and rules here.
“Pollinators form the foundations of a healthy and sustainable future for food and the environment, but in recent years, they have shown concerning signs of decline. It’s important that we work to help them prosper by enhancing native pollinator habitats and protecting against pollinator declines.” (NACD)
Education and outreach are important elements of the Conservation Districts’ work at the local, state, and national levels. For 65 years, NACD’s national Stewardship Program has educated young people about the benefits of conservation and encouraged Americans to focus on stewardship. Each year, the Stewardship and Education Committee chooses a stewardship topic to be the theme for outreach efforts. More information about the stewardship program can be found at https://www.nacdnet.org/general-resources/stewardship-program/.
