LEWES, Del. — So much is going on at the Market this Memorial Day weekend. At 10 am, Executive Chef Sean Corea of the soon-to-open Lewes Oyster House on Second Street, will create an exciting meal from produce and other food grown by farmers at the Market. Located in the historic district, Lewes Oyster House honors the rich heritage of ubiquitous and democratic oyster consumption in 18th and 19th century Middle Atlantic taverns and oyster houses. They will serve simple tavern fare, expertly prepared with fresh, regionally sourced ingredients along with crisp lagers, interesting wines, and artisanal cocktails.
Children’s Storytime at the Market, a partnership with the Lewes Public Library, comes back after a two-year hiatus. Library volunteers will read books about healthy eating, farming, gardening, and nature at the Yellow Tent near the Historic Lewes Farmers Market Information Tent.
The HLFM Big Raffle returns with 3 stupendous prizes each valued at $1,000: Jazz Fest Weekend Tickets and Dinner; the Fabu-Lewes-Feast including 8-$125 restaurant gift cards; and a Private-in-Home 3-Course Chef with Wine Pairing for 10 by Executive Chef Sean Corea. Tickets are on sale at the Raffle Tent in the Market, and the drawing is September 3rd. Winner does not have to be present to win.
Also, this Saturday, the HLFM introduces a new vendor to the market—gather. Owners Marta and Mathew Walsh specialize in Alfajores; two melt-in-your-mouth shortbread cookies with either dulce de leche or fresh strawberry filling from local strawberries sandwiched in between the cookies. The husband-and-wife team live in Lewes, and Marta is the daughter of bakery owners in Central America and has over a decade of baking experience locally. She grew up indulging in a vast variety of desserts and would like to share her favorites with you.
Thirty-one farmers/producers will bring lots of beautiful strawberries, Swiss chard, spinach, snap peas, arugula, fresh-cut asparagus, lettuces, kale, Bok Choy, lamb and pork sausages, tilapia fish, oysters, live crabs or hand-picked crabmeat, grass-fed chicken, beef and pork, honey, mushrooms, eggs, jams, beautiful fresh-baked breads, pastries made with fruit from vendors at the market, herb, veggie, and flower plants, and so much more. The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is unique in that it is producer-only—customers are able to buy directly from the farmer who grew the produce. Only vendors who grow, raise or produce what they sell are allowed in this market. A true farmers market!
The market takes place at George H.P. Smith Park. However, in case of inclement weather, the Market moves to Lewes Elementary School Parking lot, 820 Savannah Road.
The Market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each market with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the Market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the Market. WIC and SFMNP coupons will also be accepted at the market starting in June.
The HLFM continues its Food Pantry Purchase Program. HLFM customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk, and other food from growers at the Market to donate to this program every Saturday. At the end of the Market, the produce and other foods are gathered and given to various food pantries including both Epworth and Casa San Francisco. The HLFM thanks its customers for their generosity.
The Market thanks The Lee Ann Wilkinson Group, 2022 HLFM Market Champion, for their continued support of the Market.
