UTICA, N.Y. — Over thirty medical doctors and residents at Mohawk Valley Health System explored research that highlights how beef nutrients support the unique nutritional needs of children, at a medical grand round in Utica, N.Y., presented by New York Beef Council on Feb 19.
Grand rounds are important learning opportunities for medical providers to stay current with latest research and guidelines relevant to their patients’ care. Presenter Cindy Chan Phillips, MS, MBA, RD, director of nutrition education, guided the attendees through children’s growth stages, and the unique nutritional needs of each stage, such as the importance of iron for cognitive development. Current children nutrition recommendations were reviewed, including the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ advice of including meat as an early solid food in an infant’s diet.
The attendees were very engaging and actively shared perceived life-style barriers to healthy eating for children. Many were interested to apply some of the strategies discussed in their practice.
Survey results of participants showed the event was very successful. After the event, eighty-two percent improved their knowledge that beef is part of a healthy eating pattern. About sixty-six percent plan to apply the knowledge in their practice. When asked about what key concepts in the talk are beneficial to them, “encourage 60 min of exercises per day,” reflected one medical provider attendee. “Beef is a good source of protein,” responded another.
“The providers are so eager to learn about how better nutrition can help their patients,” said Phillips. “Nutrition science is evolving. The satiety role of protein really resonated with them.” Phillips’ work with the NYBC is financially supported by the Kansas and Nebraska Beef Councils.
