SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Medal of Honor recipient, Spc. 5 James C. McCloughan was the keynote speaker during the main program of the Veterans & Gold Star Family Day event at the 2017 Illinois State Fair.
McCloughan received the Medal of Honor for his service during the Vietnam War. A private first class at the time, McCloughan voluntarily risked his life to rescue wounded and disoriented personnel. Despite being personally wounded by shrapnel and small-arms fire, McCloughan refused medical evacuation. Instead, he opted to stay with his unit, where he continued to brave enemy fire so that he could rescue, treat and defend his wounded comrades.
When he returned home in 1970, he was re-accepted at South Haven High School, where for 40 years he taught psychology, sociology and geography. He also coached football, wrestling, and baseball. He was inducted into the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1993, Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame 2008.
He attributes his life accomplishments to hard work and dedication. “What I did is not about the medal, it is about the lives that were saved,” stated McCloughan.
McCloughan’s speech was described by those in attendances as inspiring and moving. It captivated the entire audience. “It was truly an honor to have him at the 2017 Illinois State Fair and we thank all the men and women for their service,” stated State Fair Manager Kevin Gordon. “McCloughan’s speech was a great way to honor veterans and their families.”
