HUBBARD, Iowa — Organic crop farmers Roger and Mary Knutson, along with their son-in-law Jacob Bolson, will host a virtual field day in partnership with Practical Farmers of Iowa and University of Northern Iowa’s Center for Energy & Environmental Education exploring mechanical weed control on Saturday, May 30, from 9-10 a.m.
The event – “Equipment and Automation Tools for Mechanical Weed Control” – is free to attend and will take place on Facebook Live. To join in, visit facebook.com/practicalfarmers/events and click the link for the May 30 field day.
You do not need to be a PFI member or have a Facebook account to participate – but those without an account will not be able to comment or ask questions. The field day is sponsored by Pipeline Foods and Reichhardt Electronic Innovations, Inc.
This event marks the launch of Practical Farmers’ 2020 field day season, which includes more than 60 virtual events hosted by farmers located across the state, and beyond, on topics spanning the agricultural spectrum.
New this year, we have planned several event series that will let participants check in with certain farmer hosts throughout the season to learn about different facets of farm management. All are free and offered a la carte: guests are welcome to attend all events in the series or pick the ones they’re most interested in.
At the Knutson and Bolson field day, guests will learn about sliding hitches for cultivators, basic GPS guidance, autosteer and other tools that can be put to work on an organic farm. The event will feature a live cultivation demonstration in organic corn.
Roger, Mary and Jacob will share a broad enough perspective to benefit any farmer interested in mechanical weed control, from a 20-acre vegetable farmer with a four-row cultivator to a 2,500-acre farmer with a 12-row cultivator.
Roger and Mary Knutson operate a diverse organic farm in Hardin County, Iowa. Jacob Bolson, their son-in-law, lives with his wife and four children on an acreage outside of Hubbard in Hardin County, helping on the Knutson farm and working in the farm equipment industry.
