WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — High tunnels have added a new dimension of crop diversity, season extension, and
market profitability for Kentucky’s vegetable, fruit, and herb growers, yet planning, timing, and management needs of high tunnel production often present a new learning curve.
This OAK Field Day at Good Thymes Organic Farm will include a thorough look into two high tunnels at different stages of production: one, with the last of the summer’s cash crops; the other, in transition to fall and winter crops. Host farmers Cortney Moses and Paul Dengel, assisted by UK Cooperative Extension personnel and Grow Appalachia representatives, will walk us through demonstrations and discussions of growing under cover…
- Irrigation: drip, micro, seasonal
- Pest, disease, weed control
- crop management: rotations, timing, temperature
- fertility and soil management
A visit to the Farm’s pack shed and discussion of the logistics involved in post-harvest storage will allow a full-
circle perspective into the infrastructure of seed-to-consumer diversified vegetable production.
This Field Day is geared towards production farmers and will highlight mid-scale mixed vegetable production. Cost for this Field Day is $5 for OAK and Grow Appalachia Members; $10 non-members.
