COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. — The Master Gardeners of Montgomery County are holding a Workshop on Winter Sowing at the 4-H Center, 1015 Bridge Road (Route 113), Collegeville, PA 19446. To accommodate busy schedules, the Workshop will have two sessions, one on Saturday, January 7, 2023, and one on Tuesday, January 10, 2023. Each session will run from 9:45 to 11:30 AM.
Winter sowing is a method of starting seeds outdoors in winter. This workshop will cover the benefits of this method of germinating seeds and the advantages it has over indoor seed-starting which requires grow lights and the hardening-off of seedlings. In addition to learning winter sowing techniques, what materials are needed and what seeds can be used, participants will make a mini greenhouse in a container and sow seeds to take home with them. The workshop will also cover how to plant the seedlings once they germinate.
Workshop presenters are Lori Curtis and Sandie Menke, Penn State Montgomery County Master Gardeners who have been winter sowing seeds successfully for many years. Master Gardeners have been specially trained and certified by Penn State Extension and provide education on a broad range of horticultural topics and practices based on university research and recommendations.
There is no charge for these workshops although donations will be appreciated. No previous gardening experience is needed, and all materials will be provided. Space is limited and registration by Thursday, January 5, 2023, is required. To register, please email montgomerymg@psu.edu with your name, contact information and which session you want to attend. If you have any questions, call 610-489-4315. Free parking is available.
