MONTROSE, Pa. — The Penn State Extension Master Gardeners in Susquehanna County are hosting a Make Your Own Tomato Cages program on Saturday, May 7 (rain or shine) 10:00 am to 1:30 pm at the Penn State Extension Office, 88 Chenango Street in Montrose. You will learn how to make extremely sturdy, long lasting tomato cages, as Penn State Extension Master Gardener, George Schreck, guides you through the process while offering valuable education on growing tomatoes and disease prevention. Â This program is being held in partnership with the Montrose Area Adult School and is being held in conjunction with the annual Fundraising Master Gardener Plant Sale! Tired of those flimsy cages you buy at the box stores? Â Want something better? Â These cages will last years! Learn how to make your own cages out of concrete reinforcement wire and get some tips on growing tomatoes, cucumbers & pole beans while you are there. Each cage is approximately 5 feet tall by 2 feet round. Â Be sure to bring a vehicle that they will fit in! The cost of material for each cage is $6.00, plus a $5 class fee. This is a very popular class so register early!
