BATAVIA, N.Y. — Join the Genesee County Master Gardeners this spring as we “Catch the Gardening Bug.” We will be offering five programs through the season with our first one on March 30. Master Gardener Brenda Fox will present “20 Great Perennials for Your WNY Garden” from 6 to 8 pm. Perennial plants with a solid track record of good performance here in our local climate will be highlighted. Particular cultivars may be especially fragrant or bloom for a long time, and should readily available for purchase. Registration required by March 24.
On April 12 join us for “Permaculture 101 as Master Gardener Dan Esler covers the basics of permaculture and shows you how to get started. He’ll also explain how to combine the best of natural landscaping with edible gardening. The goal is to work with nature, not against it. Registration required by April 7.
Learn about “The Slow Flower Movement” on April 20. Do you know where your cut flowers come from or how many miles they have travelled? Master Gardener Brandie Schultz will take a look at the fascinating history of the cut flower industry. She will then talk about America’s slow flower movement and how locally grown flowers are making a comeback. Registration required by April 14.
“A Gardener’s Introduction to Integrated Pest Management (IPM)” will be held on April 26. One of the key components of IPM is scouting – taking a close look at your plants to see if insects or diseases are present. We will talk about some of the IPM techniques that you can use in your garden. Weather permitting, we will go into the garden to show you how. Registration required by April 21.
“Is Your Garden Ready for Spring?” Get tips from Master Gardeners on how to get your garden ready for the growing season on May 4th. In this semi-hands on class, we will cover a variety of topics from winter damage to dividing perennials to pruning hydrangeas. This class will take place outside in the CCE garden, so dress accordingly. Registration required by April 28.
All classes will be held from 6 to 8 pm at the Genesee County Cornell Cooperative Extension at 420 East Main Street, Batavia. Cost is $10 per person, per class. Pre-registration is required as class size is limited. Contact Brandie at 585-343-3040, ext. 101 or stop by our office to register.
