TAMWORTH VILLAGE, N.H. — On Saturday, March 24, 2018, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm in Tamworth Village welcomes visitors to their annual Maple Sugaring Day Open House. Held each year in conjunction with New Hampshire Maple Weekend, the event is free and is a celebration of New Hampshire’s sweetest natural product.
Taking place on the grounds of a historic farmstead, the open house highlights historic and modern sugaring methods. Through demonstrations and hands-on opportunities, visitors gain an understanding of early Abenaki Indian boiling practices and the boiling method typically used in traditional, woodland gathering sites known as the sugar bush. Also on view, Doc Remick’s handmade backyard boiler, fashioned from an oil drum using Yankee ingenuity.
In the Sugar House, a modern evaporator provides insight into today’s more streamlined process of turning maple sap into maple syrup. Sample Remick Farm-produced syrup, or purchase a jug to take home. Delicious Farmhouse Kitchen maple treats can be purchased for enjoyment on-site or at home, while supplies last.
The farm grounds are open for walking, with various village activities just steps away. Admission is FREE and open to the public.
As a tasty pre-event, the Tamworth Visitors Council is hosting their first annual Pancake Breakfast at The Preserve at Chocorua, from9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. the same day. Choose either buttermilk pancakes or waffles, both made with organic flour and eggs, served with a sausage patty and coffee or tea. Tamworth-sourced buttermilk from Red Gables Farm, and eggs and sausage meat from Remick Museum & Farm, will be used in creating the meal. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 12 and under, and free for children ages 4 and under. Contact Kimball Packard for more information: 603-323-6169. Proceeds will benefit Remick Museum’s Scholarship Fund, which assists children in attending one of its many summer programs.
Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm is a member of the New Hampshire Maple Producers Association. The Museum Center building and barn will not be open for this event.
