KIEL, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin Extension will be hosting a “Making Winter Wheat Profitable” Production Workshop on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 for farmers/agricultural professionals in Northeast and East Central Wisconsin at the Millhome Supper Club in Kiel. Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. with the program starting promptly at 10:30 a.m. The cost of the meeting is $20 and includes lunch.
Wisconsin harvested 250,000 acres of winter wheat in 2016, however, that number dropped significantly to only 170,000 acres in 2017. Nearly half of that production is centered in East Central Wisconsin. The East Central District was the largest winter wheat producing district in Wisconsin, with 4.42 million bushels produced in 2017. Manitowoc County continued to be the largest winter wheat producing county in Wisconsin with 787,000 bushels produced, according to estimates released today by the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service.
While it is clear that winter wheat is an important crop in East Central/Northeast Wisconsin, profitability is something that remains a challenge. In response to this need, UW-Extension will be providing an opportunity for producers to get the latest information about how they can increase the profitability of the winter wheat acres that are a part of their rotation. Three UW-Madison/UW-Extension state specialists will be on hand to share the latest in research that will help ensure the decisions you make help reap a profitable harvest. Topics and speakers for the program will include:
Shawn Conley, UW-Madison/UW-Extension Soybean and Small Grains Specialist, will discuss choosing successful winter wheat varieties, crop management decisions, and staging wheat.
Damon Smith, UW-Madison/UW-Extension Field Crops Plant Pathologist will discuss winter wheat diseases along with fungicide selection and timing.
Carrie Laboski, UW-Madison/UW-Extension Soil Scientist will discuss profitability and the 4R’s for Wheat Management.
Kevin Jarek, Crops, Soils and Horticulture Agent for Outagamie County will discuss winter wheat enterprise budgets, cost of production and marketing.
We know that margins are tight across all agricultural commodities right now, so, don’t miss your opportunity to take advantage of having the latest in UW research and expertise on hand to answer some of the difficult questions producers have faced in recent years as it relates to making winter wheat production profitable here in Wisconsin.
