FREEPORT, Maine — The Maine Organic Country Store opened on Friday, November 6, in Freeport. The store is located at 48 Main Street and is operated by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA). The store offers MOFGA and Common Ground Country Fair merchandise as well as a variety of products from the fair’s vendors and MOFGA certified organic producers.
“This store allows us to bring an idea we’ve had for several years to life,” said Sarah Alexander, MOFGA’s executive director. She added, “Not having the Common Ground Country Fair as an in-person event this year prompted us to seek out alternative ways to offer merchandise and products from our vendors to the public.”
Businesses participating in the store are all based in Maine. Common Ground Country Fair T-shirts are made in Maine by Liberty Graphics and are made with organic cotton. Other items in the store include certified organic produce, soaps and skincare products; unique, handmade items for the kitchen and home; and more. “We’re hopeful that this store can be a one-stop shop for shoppers focused on sustainable gifts for the holidays. Offering local businesses an additional sales outlet during this unusual year is a win-win for us,” said Lucy Cayard, MOFGA’s Southern Maine outreach coordinator.
Alexander said, “We’re hopeful that the sales can also help us make up the lost income from this year’s Common Ground Country Fair. The money raised will go towards our year-round educational programming for farmers and gardeners.”
The store is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., until mid-January.
Shoppers who are not in the Freeport area and wish to purchase merchandise from the MOFGA store and participating Common Ground Country Fair vendors can shop online at fairstore.mofga.org.
