PORTLAND, Maine — Beth Prelgovisk, a Health Teacher from Messalonskee High School in Oakland, will be recognized as the Maine Agriculture in the Classroom Teacher of the Year for 2018 at the National Agriculture in the Classroom Organization’s Conference ‘Agriculture for ME on Land and Sea’ to be held on June 26-29 at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland.
Ms. Prelgovisk was chosen for her program that provides high school students with education around the production of the food we eat. “Healthy nutrition is the backbone of High School health programs! Agricultural education provides an opportunity to teach children how to start a plant from seed to harvest, harvest a crop or develop a product from something they’ve grown. It is a time to celebrate the farms and farmers who grow fresh produce in the U.S. and within our state,” She says. After teaching health and physical education for 15 years, Beth feels that student driven research encourages self-motivation. Some of the projects that have resulted are apparent at Messalonskee High School. You surely cannot miss the gardens and greenhouse as you drive by, and inside, you will see aeroponic grow towers and student driven projects throughout the school. Congratulations Ms. Prelgovisk!
Maine Agriculture in the classroom’s mission is “To promote the understanding of agriculture and natural resources among students, educators, and the general public” the program is funded in part by the Maine Agriculture Specialty License Plate.
