STORM LAKE, Iowa — Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach will host a Livestock Mortality Composting workshop on March 6 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the ISU Extension and Outreach – Buena Vista County office located at 824 Flindt Drive in Storm Lake, IA.
The workshop is being held for two main reasons according to ISU Extension and Outreach Swine Specialist Dave Stender.
“The DNR plan for catastrophic death loss is composting,” Stender said. “For this reason, everyone should learn how to compost livestock mortalities as part of their emergency action plan. However, the more pressing reason in our area at this point is that Simonson Rendering Service will no longer be picking up livestock mortalities. Composting is another viable option.”
The workshop will be led by Stender, as well as ISU Extension and Outreach Agriculture Engineering Specialist Kris Kohl. Stender and Kohl will outline the principles of composting and teach producers how to properly manage deceased animal composting in accordance with Iowa’s requirements.
Kohl encourages producers to reserve their spot at the workshop by calling the Buena Vista County office at 712-732-5056, or by emailing kbrink@iastate.edu.
Stender notes that if producers are not able to attend this particular workshop, but would like more information on the topic, contact him. More workshops may be scheduled as needed.
