MANHATTAN, Kan. — It all started as a way to reach out to families stuck at home during the pandemic.
“Live at the Lazy T Ranch” is a weekly Facebook Live session presented from a family ranch near Manhattan, Kansas. The series began a year ago, in response to the pandemic.
“After the pandemic hit and stay-at-home orders were issued, my wife said she wanted to do something to help entertain and educate kids and families that were stuck at home,” said Kansas rancher and cowboy poet Ron Wilson. “She suggested we do a Facebook Live session where we could show them our animals at our family ranch. I was working from home so we decided to try it,” he said.
On April 6, 2020, the Wilsons launched “Live at the Lazy T Ranch,” a brief Facebook Live session highlighting various aspects of ranch life. These can be viewed at https://www.facebook.com/lazytranchadventures every Tuesday at 1 p.m. Central time.
“We did one every weekday at 1 p.m. for the first week,” Wilson said. “After that we decided to do one a week, every Tuesday at 1 p.m. ” Each session demonstrates something at the ranch, includes elements of agricultural education, and concludes with an original cowboy poem by Ron.
“We’ve featured horses, cows and calves, llamas and goats,” Wilson said. “Now we’ve branched out into other topics from veterinarians to cowboy attire to cattle brands,” he said. According to Facebook, the posts have attained 63,325 views to date.
The sessions continue weekly. “It’s been so much fun we haven’t had the sense to stop,” Wilson said. “It’s been a great way to reach out to people beyond the ranch,” he said.
