“Unfortunately, the legislation falls short on its promises. It does not create an adequate and sustainable funding stream for water quality programs," says Iowa Farmers Union President Aaron Lehman. (Courtesy of Iowa Farmers Union)

AMES, Iowa — Tuesday morning the Iowa State House of Representatives adopted water quality legislation originally passed by the Iowa State Senate last May. The action sends the legislation to Governor Reynold’s office. She is expected to sign the bill into law.

Iowa Farmers Union President Aaron Lehman released the following statement:

“Unfortunately, the legislation falls short on its promises. It does not create an adequate and sustainable funding stream for water quality programs. It fails to adopt a coordinated watershed approach to program design, funding allocation, and monitoring and evaluation. It does not provide a quality monitoring program for rural water supplies.”

“Farmers are being asked to do more and more to contribute to clean water and a healthy landscape during very challenging economic times. This doesn’t insure that their efforts and the investment from the state of Iowa will lead to real positive change.”

“This action means that our work is just beginning. We will continue to work with Iowa lawmakers, administrators, and all stakeholders to make the most effective water quality program possible.”
