UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Anyone interested in learning how to dry hardwood lumber to maximize product quality and value can benefit from a three-day Penn State Extension workshop.
“Kiln Drying of Hardwood Lumber Short Course” will occur from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, through Friday, Sept. 16, at the Livestock Evaluation Center, 1494 W. Pine Grove Road, Pennsylvania Furnace.
This introductory short course is designed for kiln operator trainees, plant managers and supervisors, or anyone who needs a basic understanding of drying hardwood lumber. No previous drying experience or training is necessary.
Participants will learn how to handle lumber before drying, as well as the steps involved in the drying process.
Among other topics, sessions will cover:
— Wood moisture relations.
— Kiln operation.
— Lumber handling and storage.
— Drying schedule preparation.
An early bird registration fee of $350 is available through Sept. 1. After Sept. 1, the registration fee will increase to $400. The registration fee covers lunch all three days.
