CARLISLE, Pa. — What is sustainable gardening? It’s gardening for the long term, an earth-friendly approach that can save you time and money by reducing pesticide use, conserving natural resources, and enhancing biodiversity in your own garden. Join Penn State Extension in Cumberland County for its annual “Sustainable Gardening Series” and learn tips and techniques to create home gardens that are healthy, beautiful and productive.
The sessions will be held on Wednesday evenings, April 5, 12, 19 and 26 from 7 to 8:30 pm, at the Cumberland County Extension office, 310 Allen Road, Carlisle, PA, 17013. Highlighting the series on April 12 is garden writer and horticulturist George Weigel, who will present “10 Ways to be a Greener Gardener,” with key steps that you can take to be a more eco-friendly gardener.
On April 26, Penn State Master Gardener Pat Welfley will take the fear out of pruning for gardeners with a presentation on “Pruning Ornamental Plants,” including hands-on demonstrations, outdoors if weather permits. Other topics lined up for the series and presented by Extension Educator Annette MaCoy are separating garden fact from garden fiction on April 5; and on April 19, controlling the little critters — voles, rabbits and groundhogs, among others — that rampage through your garden.
Classes include time for your questions; the fee covers handouts and light refreshments, and door prizes will be given at each class. The registration fee for each class is only $5; registration for all four is $20. Class size is limited, and registration is requested by one week prior to each class date. Walk-in registration at the door is $8 per class if space is available.
