MADISON CO., N.Y. — With unfortunate youth program cancellations around the country, Madison County 4-H (through Cornell Cooperative Extension) as well as other local youth organizations are thinking up innovative ways to keep youth entertained this summer. Many youth in the county depend on camps, fairs, and recreation programs to keep busy when school is out. Luckily, with today’s technology, many programs are still being held virtually or in person following social distancing guidelines.
With New York State (NYS) 4-H deciding to opt out of the NYS Fair and cancelling state events, county programs have assumed the creative power to safely recreate what events they can. To no surprise, the 4-H community has pulled together several successful virtual programs, such as a State Dairy Bowl event, and are continuing to serve the state’s youth.
In Madison County 4-H, DIY videos, virtual contests, and educational livestock videos were just the start of virtual offerings. Thanks to a generous donation of buckets from Runnings of Rome and a grant from the CNY Community Foundation, we are able to offer a series of virtual events with the theme Think Outside the Bucket! This is a three- week program where youth receive a bucket of materials to complete projects throughout each week, complete with virtual check-ins with 4-H Educators. In addition, options are being explored for virtual livestock shows, STEM programs, and more!
