TAYLORVILLE, Ill. — To help the public learn more about establishing and maintaining a healthy orchard, University of Illinois Extension Horticulture Educator Andrew Holsinger will host an interactive three-part series designed to provide on overview of the care for fruit trees. The Home Orchard Series will be loaded with tips and strategies to help you improve and maintain your backyard orchard.
This three-part series will be held at the University of Illinois Extension (1120 N Webster St., Taylorville) on the third Tuesdays in February, March and April from 10-11:30 a.m. Registration is $15 for the series, sponsored by University of Illinois Extension.
The three sessions will include:
February 20 – Home Orchard Pruning
This workshop will look the key steps in successful tree fruit pruning. Participants will have the opportunity to conduct actual pruning and gain both experience and confidence in pruning fruit trees.
March 20 – Grow Your Own Tree Fruit – Home Orchard Establishment & Basics
Presented by the Andrew Holsinger, this program provides information on managing your backyard fruit trees wisely. Learn the basics of planting fruit trees, including site selection, choice of variety and rootstock, best planting practices, fertilization and ongoing fruit tree care.
April 17 – Home Orchard Pest Management
At this program, you can learn the basics of pest and disease identification and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in the home orchard. One of the most challenging aspects of growing your own fruit is knowing how to identify insect pests and diseases.
Participants are encouraged to attend all three sessions, but it is not required; in case of conflicts, handouts will be mailed at the conclusion of the series.
