MANHATTAN, Kan. — Corn for grain production in Kansas based on year-end surveys is estimated at 751 million bushels, down 2% from 2020, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Yield of 139 bushels per acre is up 5 bushels from last year. Area harvested, at 5.40 million acres of corn for grain, is down 6% from 2020.
Corn for silage production, at 4.32 million tons, is down 11% from last year. Silage yield of 18.0 tons per acre is down 2.0 tons from last year. Producers harvested 240,000 acres of corn for silage, down 4% from last year. Corn area planted for all purposes, at 5.70 million acres, is down 7% from last year.
Sorghum for grain production in 2021 is estimated at 265 million bushels, up 11% from 2020. Yield, at 78.0 bushels per acre, is down 7.0 bushels from a year earlier. Area harvested for grain, at 3.40 million acres, is up 21% from 2020.
Sorghum for silage production, at 1.15 million tons, is up 28% from last year. Silage yield, at 13.5 tons per acre, is down 1.5 tons from last year. Area harvested for silage, at 85,000 acres, is up 25,000 acres from last year. Sorghum area planted for all purposes, at 3.60 million acres, is up 20% from last year.
Soybean production for 2021 totaled 190 million bushels, down 3% from 2020. Yield, at 39.5 bushels per acre, is down 1.5 bushels from a year earlier. Area for harvest, at 4.80 million acres, is up 1% from 2020. Soybean area planted, at 4.85 million acres, is up 1% from last year.
Alfalfa hay production, at 2.48 million tons, is up 24% from a year earlier. The average yield, at 3.60 tons per acre, is down 0.10 ton per acre from 2020. Area harvested, at 690,000 acres, is up 28% from 2020.
Alfalfa for haylage and greenchop production, at 168,000 tons, is up 110% from last year. Average yield at 5.60 tons per acre, is up 0.30 ton from last year. Area harvested, at 30,000 acres, is up 15,000 from last year. Seedings of alfalfa during 2021 totaled 90,000 acres, up 5,000 acres from the year earlier.
All other hay production, at 3.30 million tons, is down 15% from last year. The average yield, at 1.65 tons per acre, is down 0.25 ton per acre from last year. Area harvested at 2.00 million acres, is down 2% from 2020.
All other haylage and greenchop production, at 808,000 tons, is up 38% from last year. Average yield, at 8.50 tons per acre, is up 2.00 tons from last year. Area harvested, at 95,000 acres, is up 5,000 acres from last year.
Oil sunflower production in 2021 is 38.4 million pounds, down 50% from last year. Yield, at 1,600 pounds per acre, is up 130 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 24,000 acres, is down 54% from 2020. Area planted, at 25,000 acres, is down 29,000 acres from last year.
Non-oil sunflower production of 14.4 million pounds is down 45% from last year. Yield, at 1,600 pounds per acre, is up 150 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 9,000 acres, is down 9,000 acres from 2020. Area planted, at 10,000 acres, is down 9,000 acres from last year.
Canola production of 7.80 million pounds is up 56% from last year. Yield of 1,200 pounds per acre is down 590 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 6,500 acres, is up 3,700 acres from 2020. Area planted, at 7,000 acres, is up 2,000 acres from last year.
Cotton production of 200,000 bales is down 33% from last year. Yield of 950 pounds per acre is up 167 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 101,000 acres, is down 83,000 acres from 2020. Area planted, at 110,000 acres, is down 85,000 acres from last year.
Principal crop area planted totaled 24.4 million acres, up 4% from 2020. Area harvested, at 23.8 million acres, is up 5% from last year. Kansas principal crop acres include corn, sorghum, oats, barley, winter wheat, soybeans, sunflower, cotton, canola, and all hay. Double cropped acres and unharvested small grains planted as cover crops are also included.
Nationally, corn for grain production in the United States was estimated at 15.1 billion bushels, up 7 percent from the 2020 estimate. The average yield in the United States was estimated at a record high 177.0 bushels per acre, 5.6 bushels above the 2020 yield of 171.4 bushels per acre. Estimated yields in 2021 were up from the previous year across most of the Eastern Corn Belt, Northeast, and most of the Southeast. Record yields were estimated in Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Washington, and Wisconsin. Corn planted area, at 93.4 million acres, was up 3 percent from the 2020 estimate. Area harvested for grain was estimated at 85.4 million acres, up 4 percent from the 2020 estimate.
National soybean production in 2021 totaled a record 4.44 billion bushels, up 5 percent from 2020. The average yield was estimated at 51.4 bushels per acre, 0.4 bushel above 2020. Planted area for the Nation, at 87.2 million acres, was up 5 percent from the 2020 planted acreage. Soybean growers harvested 86.3 million acres, up 5 percent from 2020. Record high yields occurred in Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
