TRENTON, N.J. — The June Acreage report provides official, survey based estimates of U.S. farmers’ 2020 planting acreage, according to Bruce Eklund, State Statistician of the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Jersey Field Office. The estimates of planted and harvested acreages are based primarily on surveys conducted during the first 2 weeks of June.
New Jersey corn planting for all purposes are up 17 percent from last year. Conversely, soybean planting intentions are down 16 percent from last year. The last time New Jersey corn planted acres exceeded those of soybeans was 2011, though they were tied in 2013. The expected 20,000 wheat harvested acres are up 43 percent from last year’s harvested acres, the highest since 2014. Expected hay harvested acres are up 6,000 acres from last year’s harvested acres. The expected alfalfa part of that hay harvested acreage is the highest since 2013.
New Jersey’s 2020 key findings in the report are:
- Corn planted area for all purposes is estimated at 90,000 acres.
- Soybean planted area is estimated at 80,000 acres.
- Winter Wheat area planted is estimated at 25,000 acres.
- Hayarea harvested is estimated at 97,000 acres, 17,000 of those being alfalfa.
Nationally, corn planted was up 3 percent from 2019, soybean acreage was up 10 percent, but all wheat acreage was down 2 percent, representing the lowest wheat planted acreage since records began in 1919.
