General Microbiologist #00154 – Harrisonburg

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Division of Animal and Food Industry Services is seeking a qualified individual to process and complete serological testing on samples submitted for diagnostic and regulatory purposes at the Regional Animal Health Laboratory located in Harrisonburg. The selected individual will perform ELISA and AGID testing, agglutination testing, and molecular testing using the ABI 7500, and will be cross-trained in Diagnostic Microbiology. This position is responsible for processing specimens from external clients and necropsies and the candidate will be performing biochemical evaluation of microorganisms isolated from submissions and preparing Minimum Inhibitory Concentration reports. The General Microbiologist will also be responsible for the media preparation according to testing needs and will enter results into an automated Laboratory Information System (LIMS). This position works collaboratively, and as a team member, to assist with other related laboratory procedures as needed. Occasional, minimal weekend work is required.
QUALIFICATIONS: Considerable knowledge of the theory and application of microbiology, molecular biology, and serological testing techniques. Experience working in a laboratory setting along with current or recent clinical and/or diagnostic veterinary or human medical microbiology experience. Demonstrated computer proficiency to include laboratory information management systems and basic office software, along with sound analytical skills, and exceptional customer service and communication skills. Proven ability to follow oral and written directions with precision and accuracy; to work with technical equipment; to develop logical conclusions; and to work collaboratively within a team environment. Laboratory quality control, or regulatory experience desired along with experience working ISO 17025 or similar laboratory quality management system. Testing formats requires precision, manual dexterity and visual acuity. H.S. Diploma/GED required. Prefer: Graduation from a college or university with a degree in Biology, Microbiology, or a closely related scientific field that is supplemented with work in a clinical microbiology laboratory. Regulatory experience in animal health technology including FDA/IMS milk testing, serology, bacteriology, parasitology and mycology also preferred. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding qualifications may substitute for this education and experience. Hiring Salary Range: $47,759 – $55,125 annually. Excellent State Benefits.
