HUDSON, N.Y. — Columbia and Greene 4-H alumnus Ben Gardner received a Jersey calf through a calf award program of the Niagara County 4-H program in 2008.  Since then, that one calf has now become a string of nine cows.  He would like to pay it forward by gifting a Jersey calf born last fall to an interested youth who lives in Columbia or Greene county – so he/she may begin to grow their own herd.

Expectations:

  1. Applicant must be a resident of Columbia or Greene County.
  2. Applicant must be 8-15 years old as of January 1, 2021.
  3. Winner will join a 4-H club if not already a 4-H member in Columbia & Greene Counties.
  4. Winner will receive delivery of the calf before June 15, 2021.  The calf will be registered in the new owner’s name with the Breed Association by Ben.
  5. Winner will provide adequate housing as well as proper feed and health care for the calf.
  6. Winner will show calf in appropriate 4-H classes at the Greene County Youth Fair and/or Altamont Fair OR Columbia County Fair.
  7. Winner must agree to return either the first or second heifer calf produced by this animal to pay it forward to another deserving local youth.
  8. After all scholarship requirements are met, if the winner desires to sell the award animal, they are free and clear to do so.
