KINGSTON, N.Y. — The mission of the New York Invasive Species Awareness Week (#NYISAW) is to promote knowledge and understanding of invasive species and the harm they can cause by engaging citizens in a wide range of activities across the state, and empowering them to take action to help stop the spread. NYISAW is annual education campaign. This year it will take place from June 6th to June 12th, 2022. CCEUC will have various outreach initiatives, including tabling events, and a virtual (pictorial) scavenger hunt.
To participate in our scavenger hunt, submit five photos that you have taken of invasive species you have seen in Ulster County to Jim O’Connell and Courtney Churchill and earn a fabulous prize! Please email photos to Jim at jmo98@cornell.edu and Courtney cmc534@cornell.edu by June 14th 2022. For a list of invasive pests and plants visit our website at http://ulster.cce.cornell.edu/gardening/invasive-nuisance-species.
Additionally, on June 6th and June 7th, 2022 from 1pm to 4pm, Jim O’Connell, CCEUC Sr. Agricultural Educator, and Courtney Churchill, CCEUC Master Gardiner Coordinator will host a special outreach event at the Walkway Over the Hudson. Visit with them and take a selfie in a spotted lanternfly (SLF) cutout to promote #spottedlanternflyawareness.
The SLF cutout project was contracted by the Lower Hudson Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management using funds from the Environmental Protection Fund as administered by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
