SPRING VALLEY, Wis. — High consumer demand for organic food means opportunities for more farmers to grow organic grain and crops, which earn a premium price in the marketplace. To help farmers access this market and learn about organic systems, the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES) hosts a workshop Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017 in St. Louis following the Organic & Non-GMO Forum.
“Organic Transition for Commercial-Scale Farms” runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch. Tickets are $100 in advance, $150 onsite. Registration and details are online at mosesorganic.org/nov-8-workshop.
“This event is geared for farmers who are considering switching to an organic system, or who want to create a split operation,” said John Mesko, MOSES executive director. “There’s a lot of interest in organic right now. This workshop will answer farmers’ questions and give them key information to help them make decisions.”
Workshop speakers include Mesko; Kellee James, founder of Mercaris, a market data service and trading platform for organic crops; Dave Bishop of PrairiErth Farm in Atlanta, Illinois, who is the MOSES Organic Farmer of the Year; and, Kent Solberg, from the Sustainable Farming Association. The Andersons company also has a speaker on the agenda. The workshop includes a Q&A with a panel of farmers, including Bishop and several others who are in the process of transitioning to organic.
MOSES is a nonprofit that provides the education, resources, and practical advice farmers need to succeed in sustainable, organic production. The MOSES Organic Farming Conference, the country’s largest educational event on organic agriculture, takes place Feb. 22-24, 2018, in La Crosse, Wis.
