GREEN BAY, Wis. — Extension Brown County is offering an educational meeting to help interested growers and their support teams learn more about the rules, regulations, and other basics for growing industrial hemp for seed, fiber, or cannabidiol (CBD) oil. This meeting is for interested growers and those who support them which may include agronomists, agricultural lenders, agency staff, educators, and others.
Those planning to grow industrial hemp this year have an extended window until March 1 to apply to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection for the required licensing and registration. This was extended from the previous December 2018 deadline. Jennifer Heaton-Amrhein from the DATCP Industrial Hemp Research Pilot Program will cover requirements for obtaining license and registration and give an update on results from last year’s first research pilot program. Larry Konopacki, general counsel to the Wisconsin Hemp Alliance, will discuss the legalities of growing industrial hemp. Agronomics, including variety selection, establishment, crop culture, harvesting, and post-harvest issues along with economics/profitability both within and beyond the United States, will be covered by Dr. David Williams, agronomist at University of Kentucky. Finally, a panel of local growers will provide their perspectives on last year and answer questions.
Registration is free but limited to the first 120 pre-registrants. An online webinar option will also be available for free to anyone who wishes to watch live. Most of the sessions will be recorded and then posted online at the Extension Brown County YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/browncountyag.
