ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Corn and soybean production in Illinois are both forecasted to be up significantly from last year according to the Illinois Crop Production Report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, Heartland Regional Field Office.
Corn: Planted area is estimated at 11.4 million acres, up 5 percent from the previous forecast and up 9 percent from last year. Harvested area, forecast at 11.2 million acres, is up 5 percent from the previous forecast and up 10 percent from 2019. Based on October 1 conditions, the Illinois corn yield is forecast at 200 bushels per acre, down 3 bushels from last month but up 19 bushels from 2019. Production is forecast at 2.24 billion bushels, up 21 percent from last year’s production.
Soybeans: Planted area is estimated at 10.30 million acres, up 4 percent from last year. Harvested area, forecast at 10.25 million acres, is up 4 percent from 2019. Based on October 1 conditions, the Illinois soybean yield is forecast at 60 bushels per acre, up 6 bushels from 2019. Production is forecast at 615 million bushels, up 16 percent from 2019.
Alfalfa hay: Harvested area, forecast at 240,000 acres, is up 20 percent from 2019. Based on October 1 conditions, the Illinois alfalfa hay yield is forecast at 3.20 tons per acre, down 0.30 ton from the previous year. Production is forecast at 768,000 tons, 10 percent above 2019.
Other hay: Harvested area, forecast at 250,000 acres, is up 14 percent from 2019. Based on October 1 conditions, the Illinois other hay yield is forecast at 2.40 tons per acre, up, 0.40 ton from the previous year. Production is estimated at 600,000 tons, 36 percent above 2019.
Nationally, Corn production for grain is forecast at 14.7 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the previous forecast but up 8 percent from 2019. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average a record high 178.4 bushels per harvested acre, down 0.1 bushel from the previous forecast but up 10.9 bushels from last year. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 82.5 million acres, down 1 percent from the previous forecast, but up 1 percent from the previous year. Acreage updates were made in several States based on a thorough review of all available data.
U.S. soybean production for beans is forecast at 4.27 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the previous forecast but up 20 percent from last year. Based on conditions as of October 1, yields are expected to average a record high 51.9 bushels per harvested acre, unchanged from the previous forecast but up 4.5 bushels from 2019. Area harvested for beans in the United States is forecast at 82.3 million acres, down 1 percent from the previous forecast but up 10 percent from 2019. Acreage updates were made in several States based on a thorough review of all available data.
