LAMBERTON, Minn. — Growing healthy vegetables, edible landscaping, hydrangeas, and inter-plant communication will be the featured topics at the Southwest Research & Outreach Center’s annual Horticulture Day on Wednesday, April 4. Four horticulture experts will be featured at this year’s program:
- Emily Tepe is a Research Fellow in the U of MN Dept. of Horticultural Science. Her research interests include fruit production, apple rootstocks, and edible landscaping. She also runs the edible landscaping blog Artichokes and Zinnias and published a book titled The Edible Landscape.
- Michelle Grabowski is an Extension Professor in the University of Minnesota Department of Plant Pathology. She has been solving and educating on ornamental and vegetable disease problems since 2006. She focuses on teaching home gardeners, lawn and landscape professionals, and fruit and vegetable growers how to diagnose and manage plant disease without negatively impacting human health and the environment.
- Jeff Farber is the owner and founder of Greenwood Nursery. In 1981, Jeff Farber started Greenwood Nursery in Tracy, MN; five years later he opened a second location in Marshall, MN. His desire was to provide and deliver exceptional plants, supplies and service for a fair value to customers in southwest Minnesota. Greenwood Nursery grows most of its own plants on ten acres of land and in 50,000 sq. ft. of greenhouse growing area at the Tracy location.
- John Ball is a Professor in the Department of Agronomy, Horticulture & Plant Science at South Dakota State University in Brookings. His areas of special interest include: the influence of urban development on forest fragmentation; the influence of tree cover on residential heating and cooling costs; and the competitive relationships between ornamental trees and turf grasses.
