DECORAH, Iowa — The Iowa Nut Growers Association (INGA) will be hosting the 2017 Upper Midwest Hazelnut Growers Conference in beautiful Decorah IA March 3rd and 4th. This annual conference is attended by growers from throughout the Midwest.
Friday, March 3rd is the first day of the conference geared towards growers interested in getting started as well as natural resource professionals looking to expand their knowledge on this “new” perennial crop. Registration begins at noon at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds Community Building with a processing open house all afternoon. The processing demonstration will feature equipment used to husk, size, crack, and sort hazelnuts from small scale options for the beginning grower to larger pieces of equipment capable of processing hundreds of pounds per hour.
A Hazelnuts 101 session for new and beginning growers will run from 3:00 – 4:30. Topics include selecting plants, site layout and design, hazelnut establishment and care, fertilizing, harvesting, marketing and more.
Saturday, March 4th is a full day beginning at 9:00 a.m. with presentations from growers and researchers in Nebraska, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. A hazelnut harvesting panel will convene after lunch to discuss mechanical harvesting challenges and options.
Registration for the conference is $50 for both days; $25 for Friday only, and $40 for Saturday only. Vendors and organizations wishing to spread the word about a product or message are encouraged to sponsor a booth at the conference; a display table is $100.
