FREEPORT, Ill. — As the summer winds down, it is time to plant cool season vegetables. To learn more about growing vegetables late in the season, join University of Illinois Extension Local Foods and Small Farms Educator Grant McCarty for the “Cool Season Vegetables” class where he will discuss what vegetables can be grown as a late season crop, planting transplants, starting from seed, different varieties, season extension, pest management, and harvest of cool season vegetables.
“Based on our climate, we have a tight window to get these vegetables planted and growing before the first frost,” states Grant McCarty, Local Foods and Small Farms Educator. “Most of August is ideal to sow seeds or plant transplants as the warm soil and weather is needed for establishment. If you wait until September, it can be too late”
The “Cool Season Vegetables” class will be held on Thursday, August 18, 6-7 p.m. at the Freeport Public Library, 100 E. Douglas Street, Freeport, IL, and is part of the Autumn Joys of Gardening Series. To register for “Cool Season Vegetables” or other classes in the series call the University of Illinois Extension at (815) 235-4125 or online at go.illinois.edu/jsw. The Autumn Joys of Gardening Series is co-sponsored by the University of Illinois Extension and the Freeport Public Library.
If you need a reasonable accommodation to attend, please contact the Extension Office at 815-235-4125. Early requests are strongly encouraged to give sufficient time to meet your needs.
