YANKTON, S.D. — The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association has coordinated nine upcoming tours featuring specialty crops, meats and products. The next tour and program is scheduled for July 15 featuring greenhouse production, selling products via a box program, and purchasing local foods from a chef’s perspective.
Local producers, chefs, consumers and organizations involved in local or specialty foods are encouraged to attend the free tours.
On July 15th the tour at Cedar Creek Gardens, LLC (25580 249th Street/ Midland, SD) begins at 10:00 a.m. with owner, Peggy Martin. Following the tour, Peggy will present her story, Growing in Greenhouses & Selling in Boxes at 11:00 a.m.
At noon, tour participants and organizers gather for a lunch prepared by Chef Scott Brinker of Rapid City Regional Hospital. The ingredients for the meal are produced on-site. Only those wanting to eat lunch need to register. Payment for lunch is on-site. The cost is $12. Please contact Cory Tomovick (sdspamembers@gmail.com) to register for lunch. Please register no later than July 13th.
At 1:00 p.m., Chef Brinker will present, Local Food, A Chef’s Perspective.
Be cautious of GPS directions to the farm. Cedar Creek Gardens is south of I-90. Also due to road construction the specific directions to the farm will be posted on the website http://www.sdspecialtyproducers.org and on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/sdspa/
The event is sponsored by South Dakota Specialty Producers Association in partnership with the American Culinary Federation Black Hills Chapter of Professional Chefs, SDSU Extension, South Dakota Department of Agriculture, Northern Plains Sustainable Ag, and the USDA.
Please note that chefs can receive 2.00 CEH’s for each location. Master Gardeners can receive Continuing Education credits for participating in tours and volunteer hours for helping with tours. Contact Cory Tomovick (sdspamembers@gmail.com) if you wish to participate.
Eight additional tours are scheduled in August and September across the state including: August 10th– Meat Goats & Growing Tomatoes in a Greenhouse (Custer, SD), August 17th– Vineyard & SDSU Campus Gardens (Volga & Brookings, SD), August 27th– Gardens & Greenhouses & Chef Tour (Rapid City), and September 9th– Milling Organic Grains & SDSU Experimental Station (Alcester/Beresford, SD).
