UNITY, Maine — Celebrate the history, flavor and tradition of Maine apples while honoring the importance of a diversified, perennial agriculture. The annual Great Maine Apple Day, sponsored by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA), Fedco and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, takes place on Sunday, October 14, from noon to 4 p.m., rain or shine, at MOFGA’s Common Ground Education Center in Unity. Admission is $2 for MOFGA members and $4 for nonmembers; kids get in free!
Featured presentations will include:
- Cider Making
- Choosing apple varieties to grow
- Harvesting fall nuts and seeds
- Working with an existing orchard
Have a mystery apple that you want identified? This is the place! A dream team of Maine apple identifiers will be on hand to help. You can also see and taste rare and heirloom apples and bring your own varieties for others to see and taste.
The Great Maine Apple Day will offer food and local products for sale, as well. From apples and apple products to savory and sweet baked goods. Don’t forget to join us for cider tastings and our apple pie contest as well!

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA, www.mofga.org), formed in 1971, is the oldest and largest state organic organization in the country.
