MONTPELIER (AP) — The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources says farmers who want financial assistance with cover cropping must apply for funding by Aug. 1.
The agency says more than $500,000 in funding is available to farmers for practices that improve soil quality and reduce erosion and runoff from fields to improve water quality.
Farmers can apply for up to $8,000 for one or more field practices such as cover cropping, conservation tilling, aeration and rotational grazing.
Applications are due at least 30 days before the practices are put in place, except for cover cropping. Those applications are due on Aug. 1. And rotational grazing applications can be submitted anytime during the grazing season.
Agriculture Secretary Anson Tebbetts says “agricultural operations are Vermont’s greatest opportunity to improve water quality.”
