The Kentucky Soybean Board honored its yield and quality contest winners at the Kentucky Commodity Conference on Jan. 13. Goetz Brothers Farm of Daviess County had the top full-season entry in the state, with 112.02 bushels per acre, setting a new state soybean yield record.
To commemorate this accomplishment, the Kentucky Soybean Board presented Goetz Brothers Farm with “100 Bushel Club” jackets, personalized with their farm name and crop year in addition to the standard trophies and prize money. Other entrants into the 100 Bushel Club for 2021 include O’Bryan Grain Farms of Daviess County and Greenwell Acres of Union County, both with 109.95 bushels/acre, Knott Farms of Daviess County with 108.06 bushels/acre, Stephen Farms of Daviess County with 106.30 bushels/acre, Ken-Maur Farms of Daviess County with 104.69 bushels/acre, and Flat Lick Grain Farms, LLC. of Daviess County with 104.59 bushels/acre.
In double-crop soybeans, Dixon Farms of Hickman County won the Irrigated Division with 73.13 bushels per acre, followed by Ken-Maur Farms of Daviess County with 68.00 bushels/acre. The Goetz Brothers were in the winner’s circle again for Non-Irrigated double-crop soybeans with 79.06 bushels/acre, followed by Dixon Farms of Hickman County with 67.33 bushels per acre. Double-crop beans are sown into the stubble of winter wheat, which is harvested in the spring. This process gets its name because the farmer gets a “double crop” from the field, as opposed to full-season soybeans, which yield only one crop per year.
District yield contest winners include Andrew Bullock of Muhlenberg County, Stephen Farms of Daviess County, and Mark Thomas of Hardin County. For complete yield and quality contest information, visit www.kysoy.org. Yield contest information may be found under the “News” tab.
In the 2021 soybean quality contest, Meredith Farms of Henderson County had the highest percent oil at 25.26 percent, while second place in oil went to PPJ Thompson Farms of Daviess County with 24.22 percent. In protein, PPJ Thompson Farms had the highest percent at 41.55, and Mark Thomas took second with 41.06 percent.
These contests would not be possible without the county contest supervisors. Troy Muse was recognized as the supervisor with the state championship entry, Clint Hardy as the supervisor with the top three average yield and most entries submitted, and Cloton Hardy and Matt Adams for submitting 3 or more entries.
The Kentucky Commodity Conference is the annual meeting of soybean, corn and small grain growers in the state. The Kentucky Soybean Yield and Quality Contest is sponsored by the Kentucky Soybean Association, the Kentucky Soybean Board and the University of Kentucky with support from Owensboro Grain, AgriGold, Pioneer, FMC, DeKalb/ASGROW, Beck’s Hybrids, CGB, Channel and Stine.
