TIMONIUM, Md. — Giant Food store in Timonium won the trifecta at the Maryland State Fair Youth Livestock Sale on Aug. 27, winning the bids for the Grand Champion Market Steer, the Grand Champion Market Hog and the Grand Champion Market Lamb. The sale was the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work and competition by hundreds of 4-H/FFA youth.
The 69 4-H/FFA youth, between the ages of 8 and 18, who qualified to participate in the sale received proceeds raised from the sale of their livestock to invest in their education or a new livestock project.
“This is an excellent opportunity for the youth. They have invested a lot of time and money in their livestock in order to prepare them for competition and auction,” said Maryland State Fair Director of Agriculture Programs Robert Fogle. “It teaches them responsibility for their animals, how to make wise management decisions and provides the financial support and encouragement necessary to meet future goals.”
“We are grateful to Giant Food of Timonium, Bounds Accounting and Tax Service, The Mill, Deggeller Attractions, Rippeon Equipment Co. and the many other community businesses and individuals who help support our 4-H/FFA youth’s efforts each year,” said Fogle.
Kaylie Shelton of Frederick in Frederick County sold her 1254-pound Grand Champion Market Steer to Giant Food of Timonium for $11,286 ($9 per pound).

The Maryland State Fair Youth Livestock Sale located in the Cow Palace began with the Black Eyed Susan Dinner Social featuring pork, lamb and smoked beef donated by local producers, among them Roseda Farm. The event provided the opportunity for buyers to meet the youth participating in the sale.
