FREEPORT, Ill. — Join University of Illinois Extension for the next topic in the “Livestock Production and Principles for Beginners Webinar Series.” Sarah Farley, Local Foods and Small Farms Extension Educator will discuss “Getting Started with Meat Goat Production” on Thursday, March 16 at 6 p.m. This program is being offered as a Zoom webinar and is at no cost to participants.
Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, March 15, 2023, to receive the Zoom link. To register or for more information on the program please visit us online at go.illinois.edu/meatgoats or call our office at 815-235-4125.
In this session, we will explore basic considerations for starting a meat goat enterprise. Topics include industry overview, meat goat selection, nutrition, herd health, housing and fencing, general management, and markets in Northern Illinois. As an introductory session, participants should leave with a general understanding of meat goat production and resources to get started.
“As more small farmers and even families are exploring livestock to add to their operations, goat production has been one that we have received calls about and requests for information on,” states Grant McCarty, Local Foods and Small Farms Educator. “We hope that this introductory webinar can provide our residents with answers to some of their meat goat related questions as they determine whether or not to add small ruminants to their farm.”
The last topic in the series is Farm Scale Manure Management with Jay Solomon on Thursday, April 13. This will begin at 6 p.m. and will be offered as a Zoom webinar.
If you need a reasonable accommodation to attend this program please call our office at 815-235-4125. Early requests are strongly encouraged to allow sufficient time to meet your needs.
