RALEIGH, N.C. — After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. The webinar password is FROST.
In this second, of a two-part series on STRAWBERRY frost and freeze protection, the focus will shift from winter season cold protection considerations to recommendations for using row covers and sprinkler irrigation in the pre-blossom and blossom production stages.
In this webinar, Dr. Barclay Poling, retired Horticultural Extension Specialist, NC State University, will be discussing “critical temperatures” of strawberry flower buds and blossoms under both high and low humidity conditions, and how grower needs to take into account “dew point temperatures” in deciding when and how to protect open strawberry blossoms under low atmospheric humidity (low dew point nights) vs. high humidity.
Dew point is also useful in predicting the lowest expected temperature, and how quickly the temperature will drop. Poling will be discussing the use of digital thermometers for precise blossom temperature measurement, as well as discuss options that growers have to use Micro Environmental All-in-One Weather Stations for obtaining real-time data on crop level air temperature, dewpoint and wind speeds.
