GOLDEN, Colo. — Colorado Corn Market Development and Member Services Director Melissa Walter — who also sits on the board for “From Our Lands to Your Hands” — recently helped organize and took part in an ag-education event for grade-schoolers in Golden.
During the event, Melissa talked with the 600-plus students about ethanol, and how E85 is a cleaner-burning fuel than regular gasoline, as well as the differences between field corn and sweet corn, and highlighted some of the various products made from field corn, such as biodegradable plastics, livestock feed, corn oil and others.
With less than two percent of the American workforce involved in farming, many urban children are multiple generations removed from their agricultural ancestors. Events like “From Our Lands to Your Hands,” which have been held in other Colorado communities, are key to encouraging a basic knowledge in agriculture.
There were 14 different commodities and sectors of ag and natural resources represented at the Golden event.
In addition to Melissa’s involvement, the Colorado Corn Administrative Committee (CCAC) was a sponsor of the event, which also received support from the Jefferson County Commissioners and other ag groups.
