BURLINGTON, Vt. — The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf (CEFS) is accepting donations of garden produce during the current growing season. Gardeners can bring excess produce to the Food Shelf’s receiving area towards the back of the parking lot and a staff or volunteer will collect and weigh it. Donated produce should be clean, ripe, and ready to eat. All donations are tax-deductible.
CEFS Development Director Kelly Saunders says a consistent donation of vegetables helps ensure that people have regular access to healthy, nutritious food.
“Locally-grown fruits and vegetables are healthy and nutritious, but these foods are often out of reach to many members of our community who have very limited food budgets,” Saunders said. “Donating fresh produce helps our neighbors, including families with growing children and people with diet-related illnesses like diabetes and high blood pressure, access the fruits and vegetables they need to stay healthy and active.”
The daily bread and produce program serves approximately 200-300 people during the week. CEFS serves around 11,000 total through their various programs, including the food pantry and the Good Food Truck.
