MILAN, Ill. — Love food but hate waste? You’re not alone! Food Rescue at Home is a new program from University of Illinois Extension in collaboration with the Food Rescue Partnership to give consumers practical tips, resources and ideas to divert food from the landfill, keep money in your pocket and make the world a greener place. On Wednesdays, April 11 and 25 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. you can participate in a two-part series that will explore the food waste issues in the United States. Find out what you can do to rescue food at home, discover creative uses for food scraps, learn about composting for the homeowner and local initiatives that are also working to rescue food. This is an interactive program where you’ll be able to taste recipes, watch demonstrations, and practice skills in a fun and thought-provoking environment. You won’t leave empty handed, plus you’ll have a chance to win something special at each session. The program will be led by Kristin Bogdonas, nutrition and wellness educator for Illinois Extension, and Liz Hogan-Wells, vice chair of the Food Rescue Partnership of the Quad Cities. In addition to the class sessions, there will also be field trip opportunities (included in the price) where we’ll visit the River Bend Foodbank (April 16th) and the Quad Cities Landfill in Milan (April 21st) for tours and presentations. Details on the tours will be provided at the first session.
